Mindful Hummingbird Art
An Anna's Hummingbird hovering at a feeder, iridescent throat catching the light

A window into the garden, for anyone who needs one.

Four live cameras on hummingbird feeders in a Southern California native garden. Watch, rest, and keep company with others doing the same.

Live feeders, all day

Four cameras and microphones for different aspects of the birds: two feeder views for close-up bird detail; one feeder at a distance with a parabolic microphone for bird-to-bird interactions; and one garden view with a microphone for a naturalistic setting with the backyard bird song in detail. Hummingbirds visit every few minutes, with the best views of the feeders near sunset.

A rotating art gallery

Photographs, paintings, and drawings made by individuals watching this garden.

Quiet company

A gentle chat sidebar for noticing things together about the live stream birds, the art reel, and individual creativity. Only positive comments please. Read along freely, or sign in to say something.

Why this exists

This project was built for people who can't easily get outside — because of chronic illness, disability, recovery, or circumstance. We know that spending time with nature is good for mental health, and we want to make nature accessible to all. It makes sense that this benefit could be obtained through a screen.

We'd like to prove that live streams of hummingbirds and art creation also have health benefits. So, we have a research study attached to this freely offered website. If you sign up, you can complete a one-time anonymous survey about whether watching helps you. Your answers are never linked to your account — anonymity is built into the database itself.
